Real Madrid have said that manager José Mourinho will leave the club at the end of the season. The club president Florentino Perez confirmed that the decision is a mutual one and nobody has been sacked. Mourinho will leave the club after having won only league title as the major trophy. However, he can point to the numerous close shaves that the club had in the European competitions. Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-final stage on numerous occasions under Mourinho.
Mourinho will be part of the Real Madrid team for the remaining two matches of the season, but then he is widely expected the join Chelsea in the summer. The 50-year-old has managed to win the league title and the Copa del Rey during his three years at the club. This season, they have fallen 13 points behind their arch rivals Barcelona, while they were also defeated by rivals Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final. Their hopes of winning the 10th European title were destroyed by Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals of the Champions League.
Mourinho has not had the peaceful times at the Santiago Bernabeu, while his fallout with key players of the Real Madrid squad like Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos has also been surprising.
“We’ve decided to bring our relationship to an end. Nobody’s been sacked, it’s a mutual agreement. The club and manager agree the timing is right to bring our relationship to an end. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for all his hard work. The team has improved in his three years and we wish him all the best. We have no pre-contract signed with any managerial candidate,” said Perez while also declining suggestions that Ancelotti could be the next manager at Real Madrid.
