Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid suffered yet another disappointing result, but this time it counted a lot after the latest loss against Barcelona put them four points behind the Catalan club in the title race.
Madrid had a six-point advantage at one stage in the season, but poor form in 2015 has seen Barcelona recently take the lead. Madrid absolutely had to avoid a defeat if they were to keep in the hunt for their first league title since 2012. They visited the Camp Nou for the second EL Clasico in the league. After allowing Barcelona to take the lead early on in the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled things with a fine equaliser.
Just when it seemed that Madrid may take the edge in the second half, they threw too many men forward and committed yet another defensive lapse to allow Luis Suarez to score a goal that eventually turned out to be the winner. Their defeat is yet another setback for Ancelotti, whose position at the club has been questioned a lot in recent weeks. Madrid have managed only one win in the last five matches. Apart from losing their league title, the European champions also came very close to being knocked out by Schalke in the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti has moved into quash any rumours linking midfielder Asier Illarramendi with a move away from the club.
The 24-year-old is subjected to transfer interest from several Spanish clubs, who are willing to take advantage of the fact that the player is not getting much game time at Madrid. Atletic Bilbao are thought to be one of the potential suitors for the player who could cost in the region of € 20 million. The transfer interest has particularly gathered pace after Madrid brought in Lucas Silva from Brazilian football for around £ 9 million.
The Cruzeiro midfielder has been one of the best players in Brazilian football over the last few years. After being heavily linked with Real Madrid for the last few months, the Spanish outfit finally managed to sign him. He is joined by Norwegian talent Martin Odegaard, who has reportedly cost to the club in excess of £ 3 million at just 16 years of age.

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon says that the Spanish club would not have signed Cristiano Ronaldo had it not been for him. It is widely believed that Calderon was the president who struck the £ 80 million deal to sign Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009.
However, he was ousted from the presidency just before the transfer was completed. Ronaldo has since become a major hit at Madrid and the price for signing the Portuguese star has gone to current president Florentino Perez. Calderon reckons that Perez did not fancy signing Ronaldo for this world record transfer fee.
Calderon has recalled the events that could have almost resulted in Ronaldo staying at Manchester United. The 29-year-old recently picked up the European Golden Shoe award, while he is the favorite to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award.
He has almost single- handedly helped the club win the Champions League – the 10th European title for Madrid. Calderon may not have much influence on Madrid these days, but he appears keen on returning back to the presidency. It would be difficult as Madrid have won the European trophy during Perez’ reign. It is likely to give a huge boost to Perez’ bid for the next term.
“When Florentino became president and came to the club, he wanted to break (negotiations). He thought it was very expensive. He knew he was a good player but thought he wasn’t worth that amount of money. That was a problem he had at the beginning with Cristiano, who knew that.
They said ‘we are not selling Cristiano, we don’t want him to go’ which is normal. But the player wanted to leave. We were negotiating for two years. Ferguson is obsessed with Real Madrid, he doesn’t like us very much,” said Calderon. Ronaldo is the top scorer in the Spanish league by some distance.
